Bill Cunningham: El Padre del Street Style

Si hacemos un repaso a la fotografía de street style, nos encontraríamos con los hermanos Seeberger. Las fotografías demuestran que empezaron a realizar instántaneas en los comienzos del S.XX. Retrataban a personas de la clase alta de la época.

Si los hermanos Seeberger fueron los creadores de la estética del street style, Bill Cunningham es el padre de su filosofía.

William J. Cunningham, nació en 1929. Estudió en la Universidad de Harvard y trabajó en el periódico "Chicago Tribune" como escritor.
El diseñador Oscar de la Renta ha señalado que "más que cualquier otra persona en la ciudad, él es el único que tiene un registro de la historia visual de NY de los últimos 40 ó 50 años en Nueva York”.

Su trabajo más reconocido es como fotógrafo del New York Times. Tiene una columna titulada "On the Street", donde muestra los mejores street style de Nueva York.

Su indumentaria de trabajo es muy sencila; Una camisa azul de trabajo que nunca se saca, su cámara y su bicicleta.

Uno de los fotógrafos que se inspiró en su trabajo, fue Scott Schumman. El blog "The Sartorialist" es una bitácora donde también se retrata el street style.

Schumman, estuvo en España recientemente, presentando un teléfono móvil. En la fiesta de presentación retrataba a los asistentes con ese teléfono. No sé si la intención de la campaña era mostrarnos que con ese teléfono se puede sacar buenas fotografías....

El lema del fotógrafo.

Cunningham, se pasea por Nueva York, buscando la instantánea perfecta. No le importa si la persona es una celebridad o no, sólo se fija en su ropa.

Un cazatendencias, que también ha inspirado a Garance Doré, o a Yvan Rodic de FaceHunter.

En los desfiles de moda, está sentando en el front row, pero pasando desapercibido.

El resultado de su talento, se plasma en su columna "On the street".

Ahora también puedes ver sus fotografías en el slideshow semanal que hace para el periódico New York Times en versión Online. Su voz acompaña las imágenes y al mismo tiempo, explica lo que captura su lente. Para verlo aquí.

Su trabajo, ha sido valorado y ha recibido varios premios, entre ellos fue nombrado por el Ministerio de Cultura Francesa con el título de “Caballero de la Orden de Artes y Letras”.

Su aportación al mundo de la fotografía, ha sido plasmada en un documental.

El film se titula " Bill Cunningham New York" y ha sido dirigido por Richard Press.

Recientemente, el documental ha sido nominado a los Óscars como "Mejor Documental". Fue escogido entre 124 films. Ahora compite con 14 cortos más. Para ver la lista de los finalistas pinchar aquí.

Me gusta mucho la escena final del tráiler,muy acorde con la personalidad del fotógrafo, pasando desapercibido. En varias entrevistas comenta que no le gusta ser el centro de atención, y que le gusta pasar inadvertido.

Sin duda, uno de los films del año.

Como el film no ha llegado a los cines de A Coruña, y he visto que ya ha salido en DVD, me lo han comprado. Dentro de un par de días me llegará el DVD a casa. Qué ganas de verla!
